January 2020: Fly and analyze for a good cause
Passion, inspiration, innovation – these are the tools with which the co-founder of WeRobotics, Sonja Betschart (48), thinks about the future. For the qualified marketing and management specialist, robots definitely have a place in society. They should be in harmony with the social conscience: “I firmly believe that technologies of the fourth industrial revolution such as drones and artificial intelligence should be made accessible to the weakest in society,” says the high-tech manager. The implementation of drones and artificial intelligence in humanitarian aid or nature conservation has become a global task for Sonja Betschart and has long since ceased to be a locally tied tinkerer. On the contrary: With WeRobotics, she wants to bridge the “digital divide” and bring industry, NGOs and governments in developing countries together. “We develop solutions for development aid, the health and environmental sectors.” For example, she sometimes campaigns for smallholders in Tanzania, sometimes acts as an incubator for drone companies in Nepal and leads workshops in cooperation with governments. Betschart wants to achieve that “digital technologies are used meaningfully and lastingly” and help “to democratize participation in the industrial revolution 4.0 in the global south”.
